Professor Layton and the New World of Steam lands on 10 December

A release date at last

Professor Layton is coming back. During the Nintendo Direct on 9 September 2026, Level-5 showed a fresh trailer for Professor Layton and the New World of Steam and confirmed it will launch on 10 December 2026. It is a multiplatform release, arriving on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2 and Windows PC via Steam.

The date makes good on Level-5's promise to ship the game in late 2026, after it slipped from an earlier 2025 window.

The New World of Steam takes the series across the Atlantic. Layton and his former apprentice Luke Triton reunite in Steam Bison, a fast-developing town of inventions in a fictionalised America, and the trailer showed the two working through the town together.

Players control both characters, and Level-5 leaned on the point-and-click exploration the series is known for, with puzzles woven into the environment.

The biggest puzzle set in the series

The headline for puzzle fans is scale. According to the trailer, New World of Steam carries the biggest collection of puzzles in the series history.

The puzzles were built with QuizKnock, a Japanese media platform and quiz think tank, a collaboration Level-5 is using to freshen the brain-teasers the series is built on. The trailer offered a sample of the kind of logic problem players will tackle but held back most of the story details.

That mix of exploration and standalone puzzles is the template the series has run since the original Nintendo DS games, and Level-5 is presenting New World of Steam as a fuller expression of it rather than a reinvention.

A long road back

It has been a long wait. New World of Steam is the first new mainline Professor Layton game since 2017's Layton Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaire's Conspiracy, close to a decade earlier.

Level-5 first revealed the game in 2023 and had aimed for a 2025 launch before multiple delays pushed it back. The studio has now committed to 10 December across four platforms at once, a wide simultaneous launch that is unusual for a series long tied to Nintendo handhelds, and a sign of how much is riding on the comeback. With the date locked, the studio is betting the puzzle audience has not moved on.
