Valorant's biggest event of the year is back in Shanghai. Champions 2026 opened its group stage on 24 September and runs through to the grand final on 18 October, according to the event listing on VLR.gg and the tournament's Wikipedia entry. Sixteen teams are chasing a total prize pool of $2,250,000, the figure published on the VLR.gg event page.

The tournament uses two venues. The group stage and the opening playoff rounds are held at the 5,600-seat Jing'an Sports Center, and the top-four bracket and the grand final shift to the 18,000-seat Mercedes-Benz Arena. Teams are drawn into four groups of four and play double-elimination best-of-three series, so a single bad map is rarely fatal in the opening week.

The stakes are spread across the bracket rather than piled entirely at the top. VLR.gg's prize breakdown lists $30,000 for each team finishing 9th to 12th and $20,000 for each of the 13th to 16th sides, so even a group-stage exit carries a payout before the deeper playoff shares are settled.

How the opening matches went

The first days delivered a run of clean results. In Group A, 100 Thieves beat T1 2-0 and FUT Esports saw off JD Gaming 2-0. Group B was tighter at the top: Team Vitality edged Global Esports 2-1, while LOUD dispatched EDward Gaming 2-0. These scores are taken from the completed-match list on VLR.gg for 24 to 28 September.

Group C paired two of the pre-event favourites early. G2 Esports handled TYLOO 2-0, and Paper Rex needed three maps to get past Team Liquid 2-1. In Group D, defending champions NRG opened with a 2-0 win over Nongshim RedForce, and Karmine Corp beat Xi Lai Gaming 2-0. The pattern of the first week was dominance from the winners' side and drama in the decider matches. With each group settling its advancing pair through opening, winners', elimination and decider stages, the group phase continues into early October before the eight survivors move into the playoff bracket.

Two survivors from each group

Only two teams escape each group, which turns the round-robin into a knife fight for seeding as much as survival. The group stage runs through the first days of October, and the playoff stage is scheduled to open on 7 October and conclude with the grand final on 18 October at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

For the sides that came through the franchise leagues, the format offers a small margin for error and no more. Group winners carry momentum into the playoffs, while runners-up face a harder path, so the difference between first and second in a group of four can shape the rest of a team's tournament.

The last dance for the franchise model

There is a structural story running underneath the matches. Wikipedia's tournament page notes that this is the final Champions of the franchise era, with the Valorant Champions Tour set to return to an open qualifier format in 2027. That makes the Shanghai title the last one decided under the partnered-league system Riot introduced to stabilise the top tier.

Qualification reflected that system one more time. Eight teams reached Champions by finishing in the top two of Stage 2 in their regional leagues, and eight more came through on championship points accumulated across the Americas, EMEA, Pacific and China leagues. With NRG defending and heavyweights such as Paper Rex, G2, LOUD and Team Vitality already through the door, the group stage is a genuine gauntlet rather than a warm-up.
