How big is the GTA 6 map? Rockstar's short answer
The GTA 6 map is about twice the size of GTA 5's, and Rockstar calls it the largest world it has ever built. Aaron Garbut said so in Game Informer's cover story on September 29, 2026, adding that it is bigger 'by some degree'. Rockstar has not given an official area in square kilometres or miles, so no exact figure exists yet.
That is the whole confirmed answer, and it is a ratio rather than a measurement. The rest of this guide separates the claims Rockstar has made on the record from numbers that circulate online as if they were official. If you are comparing GTA 6 with older games, the safest unit is the one Rockstar itself used: multiples of GTA 5's Los Santos and Blaine County.
What Rockstar has said about the GTA 6 map on the record
Dexerto reported that Rockstar described the map in both its Netflix extended look and its Game Informer interviews as around twice the size of Los Santos and Blaine County in GTA 5. Insider Gaming, citing the same Game Informer issue, reported the same comparison and the same line that it is the studio's biggest map 'by some degree'. Two outlets quoting the same interview is not independent confirmation, but the claim is consistent across both.
Garbut also stressed density over raw size. Insider Gaming and GTAIntel quote him describing the world as 'a cohesive whole with the density of content and a hand-crafted quality to every bit', and Insider Gaming reports he pointed to the work on rooftops, alleys and building interiors, saying the team reached 'critical mass' with the number of interiors. In other words, Rockstar is selling the idea of a world that is bigger and more detailed, not just larger, which is a harder claim to check than a number and one that can only really be judged after release.
What Rockstar has not said is just as important. It has not published square kilometres, a landmass-versus-ocean split, or a comparison to any non-Rockstar game. Anything stated to the decimal point is an estimate.
“We don't have time to take you everywhere.”
The 'three times Red Dead Redemption 2' claim, and why to hold it loosely
VICE reported on August 28 that the complete GTA 6 map is approximately three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's world. The source is YouTuber TGG, who attended a Rockstar preview the previous month and relayed what the company told attendees; VICE also reported that Vice City alone is around twice the size of Los Santos.
This is second-hand. It is a creator's account of a preview, not a Rockstar press release, and it does not line up cleanly with the Game Informer comparison. Insider Gaming's author notes that Red Dead Redemption 2's map is only slightly bigger than GTA 5's. If both claims were literally true, the three-times and two-times numbers would imply a gap that Rockstar has not explained, which is a sign the preview wording was looser than the figure suggests.
Our approach is simple, and it is the one we would suggest for anyone writing about this map: treat 'twice GTA 5' as confirmed, treat 'three times Red Dead Redemption 2' as reported, and avoid building any calculation on top of the second one.
Where the square-kilometre estimates come from
Because Rockstar gave a ratio and not an area, outlets have done the arithmetic themselves. Insider Gaming's author estimates GTA 5's map at about 75 to 80 square kilometres, with about 50 on land, and says that if Garbut's claim holds Leonida would be roughly 150 to 160 square kilometres including ocean boundaries, or around 100 on land. That is the writer's own calculation, not Rockstar data.
Other estimates circulate with very different results, and they depend on what is counted: land only, land plus water, playable space or the full rendered boundary. Without an official definition, two people can both be right and still disagree widely, so always ask what was counted before comparing numbers. A number that does not state its method is not a measurement.
If you need a figure for a video, a thread or a comparison chart, quote the ratio and attribute it to Rockstar, then label any area as an estimate with its author.
The regions of Leonida we know about so far
Rockstar's own site describes Leonida as a state and Vice City as its centre, with the tagline 'the darkest side of the sunniest place in America'. VICE's August 28 report lists the other named locations: Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Mount Kalaga and Grassrivers. It also noted that the pause-menu map now uses detailed satellite-style imagery.
Dexerto's reporting maps the real-world inspiration: Vice City stands in for Miami and the Grassrivers wetlands for the Everglades. Game Informer's 12 new screenshots, as summarised by GTAIntel, include a storm over the Keys, a Grassrivers wetland, alligators at a swamp dock, a hunter on an ATV and the Sahara Arena in downtown Vice City.
No official full map has been released, so the layout of these regions relative to one another, and how much of the space is land, water or swamp, remains unconfirmed.
What fills the space: weather, wildlife and activities
Size matters less if the space is empty, and the Game Informer story is mostly about density. GTAIntel's summary reports tropical storms and hurricanes, a new wind system that affects hair, debris, water and swamp grass, and more localised weather that can differ across the state. Rockstar has not said how often major storms occur or whether they change missions.
The same summary, citing VICE, puts the number of animal species above 170, including more than 60 bird types and more than 30 land mammals, and names manatees, flamingos, pelicans and alligators. Game Informer's coverage also describes invasive species such as green iguanas and cane toads, plus rare, discoverable and legendary animals to track.
Confirmed activities include base jumping, billiards, gyms, kayaking, mini golf, scuba diving, street and off-road racing, zoos, airboating and jet skiing. These come from Game Informer's coverage as summarised by GTAIntel and VICE's August report, and they suggest a map designed to be lived in as well as driven across.
The story will not show you everything
Rupert Humphries, Rockstar's senior vice president of narrative, told Game Informer, as quoted by Dexerto: 'We don't have time to take you everywhere.' The context, according to Dexerto and GTAIntel, is that the story is meant to bring players around most of Leonida so they get a feel for its places, cultures and vibes, while leaving parts of the map for players to find on their own.
Garbut made a similar point: players will be guided through most of the map but not every corner. For anyone worried that a bigger map means more travel padding, that is a useful signal. Rockstar is saying the story is a curated tour, and the remainder is optional.
That also means the size comparison to GTA 5 should not be read as 'twice the story'. It describes the space, and the amount of authored content inside it is a separate, unanswered question.
What we still do not know, and when it releases
Still unconfirmed are the official area, the proportion of land to water, the size of the playable boundary and whether the map will grow after launch. Rockstar has also not said how long it takes to cross Leonida by car, boat or on foot, a figure that tells players more than square kilometres do.
The release date is the one hard fact on the calendar. Rockstar's site lists GTA 6 as coming November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. When the game ships, the community will measure the map directly, and this guide will be updated with any official figure and a note of what changed. Until then, the honest answer to 'how big is it' is a ratio, not a number.
Frequently asked
How big is the GTA 6 map?
Rockstar says it is about twice the size of GTA 5's Los Santos and Blaine County map, and the largest it has built 'by some degree', according to Aaron Garbut in Game Informer as reported by Dexerto and Insider Gaming. There is no official area in square kilometres. Estimates range from roughly 100 to 160 square kilometres depending on whether ocean is counted, but those figures come from writers and fans, not Rockstar.
Is the GTA 6 map bigger than GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2?
Bigger than GTA 5, yes, by Rockstar's own account: about twice the size. For Red Dead Redemption 2, VICE reported that a YouTuber who attended a Rockstar preview said the full map is roughly three times larger. That is a second-hand report, not an official statement, so treat it as likely but unconfirmed. Rockstar's on-record comparison is only against GTA 5.
What are the regions in the GTA 6 map?
Named so far are Vice City, Leonida Keys, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Mount Kalaga and Grassrivers, per VICE's August 28 report, with Rockstar's site describing Leonida as a state centred on Vice City. Dexerto says Vice City is modelled on Miami and Grassrivers on the Everglades. Rockstar has not released a full map, so the layout and the borders between regions remain unconfirmed.
Will the GTA 6 story take you across the whole map?
Not all of it. Rupert Humphries, Rockstar's senior vice president of narrative, said 'We don't have time to take you everywhere', per Game Informer as quoted by Dexerto. The story is designed to bring players through most of the places and vibes of Leonida, and Garbut said players will be guided through most of the map but not every corner. The rest is there to be explored in your own time.
When is GTA 6 coming out?
Rockstar's website lists Grand Theft Auto VI as coming November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Insider Gaming repeats that date in its map coverage. Always check Rockstar's own page for the latest, because release dates can change, and the platforms named there are the only ones confirmed at the time of writing.
Is there an official GTA 6 map I can look at?
No full official map has been published. VICE reported that the in-game pause-menu map uses detailed satellite-style imagery, and Game Informer released 12 new screenshots of locations including the Keys, Grassrivers and downtown Vice City, but neither shows the whole state. Any complete map you see online is a fan reconstruction, so check whether it is labelled as such before using its measurements.
