Gears of War E-Day early access: what opens today

Gears of War E-Day early access begins on Thursday 1 October 2026, and it is the first moment anyone outside the studio can play the finished campaign. According to Xbox Wire, the window opens at 8am Pacific, which is 3pm UTC, and it is limited to players who bought the Premium Edition, the Premium upgrade or the Collector's Edition. Everyone else waits until the worldwide launch on 6 October.

That makes the real launch date a tiered one. Xbox Wire's post on 17 September confirmed the game had gone gold, meaning the build is finished and locked, and that pre-install opened on 29 September so nobody has to sit through a download on the day. If you plan to play on 1 October, check that your pre-install actually completed, because a game this size is not something you want to fetch at the last minute.

Gears of War E-Day release date and the full schedule

Here is the schedule as Xbox published it. Pre-install started on 29 September at 8am PT on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Steam. Early access starts on 1 October at 8am PT for Premium buyers. The standard Gears of War E-Day release date is 6 October 2026, also at 8am PT, which is also when subscribers to Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass can start playing at no extra cost.

Steam's own store page agrees with the date, listing 6 October 2026 as the release. The platforms are Xbox Series X|S and PC, through both the Microsoft Store and Steam, and the studio also lists cloud play. We have not seen a PlayStation version announced in any of the pages we opened for this report, so treat any claim of one with suspicion until Microsoft says so itself.

“We never leave Bravo Squad for the entire game. The entire story is told from their perspective.”

Gears of War E-Day price and what the Premium Edition adds

The Gears of War E-Day price is $69.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Premium Edition on Xbox's own page. If you buy Standard and change your mind, Xbox lists a $30 Premium upgrade, which brings the total to the same $99.99. Xbox Wire says the Premium Edition includes the five-day head start, weapon packs and 1,000 units of the in-game currency Iron.

The honest question is whether five days is worth $30 on a game that costs nothing extra for a Game Pass subscriber. If you already pay for Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass, the value of Premium is purely time: you get the campaign almost a week before your friends and before the spoilers pile up. If you do not subscribe, Premium is just the bigger box, and the $69.99 Standard Edition plays the same game on 6 October.

Gears of War E-Day Game Pass access and how to play it

The Gears of War E-Day Game Pass deal is a day-one one: it is included with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass from 6 October, and Xbox notes it supports Xbox Play Anywhere, so a purchase should carry across Xbox and Windows. Early access, however, is not part of the subscription. A Game Pass member who wants to play before 6 October has to pay for the Premium upgrade.

On modes, Xbox Wire describes a campaign playable solo, in two-player split-screen on console, or in four-player online co-op. Horde Siege is a PvE mode built around four classes, Assault, Marksman, Medic and Breacher, and Versus is a refined 4v4 PvP mode. The studio says it targets 4K and up to 60 frames per second across campaign and multiplayer on an Unreal Engine 5 foundation.

Gears of War E-Day PC requirements, and a warning about storage

The Gears of War E-Day PC requirements on Steam are steeper than the console pitch suggests. Minimum specs list Windows 10 64-bit, an AMD Ryzen 5 2600X, Intel i7-6850K or i5-10400, 12 GB of RAM and a ray tracing capable GPU such as an RTX 2060, RTX 5050 or Radeon RX 6600. Recommended specs move to Windows 11, a Ryzen 5 5600 or i5-11600K, 16 GB of RAM and an RTX 3060 Ti or RX 6700 XT class card.

Two lines matter more than the graphics card. Steam lists 115 GB of free space, and it states that an SSD is required, not recommended. A hard drive will not do. Hardware ray tracing is also mandatory, which quietly cuts off older GTX cards that could run most games from the last few years. If you are borderline, check the Steam page before you spend $70.

The story it tells and why Gears fans are watching

E-Day is a prequel. Per Xbox Wire's June showcase post, it takes place 14 years before the original Gears of War, over three days in the city of Kalona, as the Locust Horde first emerges from underground on Emergence Day. You play Bravo Squad, which is Marcus Fenix, Dominic Santiago and two newcomers, Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes.

The studio is pitching a tighter, more personal story. Creative Director Matt Searcy told Xbox Wire: "We never leave Bravo Squad for the entire game. The entire story is told from their perspective." Gameplay changes include jumping, sliding and smoother cover movement, plus new weapons such as the Gut Puncher and the Incinerator. That is a vendor description, so treat it as a promise to be tested by reviews, not a result. We covered the pre-release picture in our [Gears of War E-Day preview](/previews/gears-of-war-e-day-preview).

Our take: who should start on 1 October

If you have Game Pass and patience, wait for 6 October and play it for free. If you do not subscribe and you are a longtime Gears fan who wants to avoid spoilers, the $30 upgrade is a defensible indulgence, not a necessity. And if you play on PC, read the requirements first, because the SSD and ray tracing rules will catch some players out.

We have not played the game and this is not a review. Review scores will land when Microsoft lifts its embargo, and we will judge the finished game on its merits when we have played it. Until then, everything above is what Xbox and Valve have published, nothing more.

Frequently asked

When does Gears of War E-Day early access start?

Gears of War E-Day early access starts on 1 October 2026 at 8am Pacific, which is 3pm UTC, according to Xbox Wire. It is open to players who buy the Premium Edition, the Premium upgrade or the Collector's Edition. The Premium Edition gives up to five days of head start before the worldwide launch on 6 October 2026. Standard Edition owners and Game Pass subscribers have to wait until that later date, so check which edition you own before you plan an evening around it.

What is the Gears of War E-Day release date?

The Gears of War E-Day release date is 6 October 2026, at 8am Pacific, on Xbox Series X|S and PC through the Microsoft Store and Steam. Pre-install opened on 29 September 2026, so you can download it before then. Premium Edition owners can start earlier, on 1 October, and Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members can play from the 6 October launch. Xbox has not announced a PlayStation version in the pages we checked for this report.

Is Gears of War E-Day on Game Pass?

Yes. Xbox lists Gears of War E-Day as available on day one with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, which means from 6 October 2026. Early access is a separate perk of the Premium Edition and is not included with a subscription. A Game Pass member who wants to start on 1 October would need to buy the $30 Premium upgrade, while anyone happy to wait can simply download the game on launch day at no extra cost.

How much is Gears of War E-Day and is the Premium Edition worth it?

Xbox lists the Standard Edition at $69.99 and the Premium Edition at $99.99, with a $30 upgrade from Standard to Premium. Per Xbox Wire, Premium adds five days of early access, weapon packs and 1,000 Iron. For a Game Pass subscriber the main benefit is time, since the game is free to them on 6 October anyway. For a non-subscriber, the Standard Edition plays the same game, so Premium is mostly about the head start and the extras.

What are the Gears of War E-Day PC requirements?

Steam lists minimum requirements of Windows 10 64-bit, a Ryzen 5 2600X, Intel i7-6850K or i5-10400, 12 GB of RAM, a ray tracing capable GPU such as an RTX 2060 or Radeon RX 6600, and 115 GB of storage. Recommended specs are Windows 11, a Ryzen 5 5600 or i5-11600K, 16 GB of RAM and an RTX 3060 Ti or RX 6700 XT. An SSD is required, not optional, so a hard drive install is not supported.

Is Gears of War E-Day a prequel, and can you play co-op?

Yes to both. Xbox Wire says E-Day is a prequel set 14 years before the original Gears of War, across three days in the city of Kalona, with Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago. The campaign can be played solo, in two-player split-screen on console, or in four-player online co-op. There is also Horde Siege, a PvE mode with four classes, and a 4v4 Versus mode, so there is plenty to do beyond the story.
