Hideo Kojima casts Bill Skarsgård as PHYSINT's lead, with Xbox publishing

Kojima finds his leading man

Hideo Kojima used Xbox's Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast on 17 September to give his next game a face. Bill Skarsgård will play the lead in PHYSINT, the action-espionage title from Kojima Productions, and the director shared a new poster he shot himself of Skarsgård alongside co-star Charlee Fraser. The rest of the named cast is Don Lee and Minami Hamabe, with more casting promised later.

Kojima framed the choice as a meeting of fans. He said he and Skarsgård have long admired each other's work and had decided to take on the project together, adding that costume fittings, scans and camera tests earlier in the year left him confident about where PHYSINT is heading.

Xbox becomes the publisher

The other big line from the segment was business, not casting. Xbox will publish PHYSINT, deepening a relationship that already covers Kojima's horror project OD. It marked the first substantial update on PHYSINT in more than a year, and Kotaku noted it is the first word on the game since the project moved under Xbox as publisher. Kojima said development is making steady progress.

PHYSINT is an action-espionage game that Kojima has pitched as a return to the genre he defined with Metal Gear, and outlets including Kotaku describe it as a spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid. It is not the only project on the slate. Kojima also gave an update on his horror game OD, now carrying the subtitle KNOCK, sharing behind-the-scenes performance-capture footage featuring Sophia Lillis and Hunter Schafer.

Xbox confirmed it will publish that game too, and framed the arrangement as reaching beyond games into film and television. For Kojima Productions, an independent studio, tying two major titles and a media partnership to Xbox is a sizeable bet on one platform holder, and a marker of how much Microsoft is willing to spend to keep a marquee creator in its stable.

A show cut short by weather

The reveal landed at a Tokyo Game Show that did not run its full course. Organiser CESA cancelled the event's final day, Monday 21 September, as Typhoon No. 25 approached, citing forecasts of intensifying wind and rain and the risk of transport disruption. The notice put the safety of attendees, exhibitors and staff first and confirmed refunds for that day's tickets.

Sunday 20 September went ahead as scheduled, with organisers warning that some content could still be modified for safety and noting that a few Monday stage events might still be streamed online if the venue was cleared. The weather did not blunt the headlines from the show floor, though. Between Kojima's casting reveal and a run of Xbox announcements, the show delivered its biggest news before the storm forced the doors shut, and PHYSINT was among the loudest items of the week.
