Modern Warfare 4 DMZ: the dates that matter
Modern Warfare 4 DMZ is open sooner than the rest of the game for anyone who buys early. Xbox Wire's 9 October feature says players who digitally pre-order or pre-purchase Modern Warfare 4 get Campaign early access starting Friday 16 October and all of DMZ from Tuesday 20 October. The wider launch is October 23, the date Activision gave when it first revealed the mode in June.
The mode is Call of Duty's second attempt at an extraction shooter. It is a full-scale pillar of the game this time, not a bonus download, and Xbox Wire describes it as an open-world combat environment where players loot, complete objectives, fight enemies and rival Operators, and extract. Everything below comes from that post and from Activision's own reveal, as relayed by Gematsu. We have not played the mode.
Three ways to deploy on the Hajin map
DMZ takes place on Hajin, a new map that Xbox Wire says is inspired by events and locations from the Modern Warfare 4 Campaign. Activision's June description calls it the Hajin Exclusion Zone. The story picks up after the Campaign and centres on identifying and dismantling a new threat that Xbox Wire does not name.
You choose how to enter. Story Missions are narrative-led, replayable deployments, some locked behind prerequisites, with high-value gear and DMZ Cash as rewards. Dynamic Operations let squads chase several objectives for DMZ XP, Cash and a Supply Drop. Free Roam is the third option, listed by Xbox Wire without description. PvP and PvE share the same world, so any route can end in a firefight with another squad.
For a player deciding when to jump in, that sequence is the useful part. Campaign opens first on October 16, DMZ follows on October 20, and the full public launch lands on October 23, so a pre-purchaser has a staggered week rather than a single drop.
“DMZ is the definitive Call of Duty extraction experience: a living combat sandbox where every deployment is a new story.”
Crafting, operators and the DMZ progression loop
The Forward Operating Base is the hub. Its 3D Printer is the crafting station, and Xbox Wire says players unlock recipes and upgrades as they progress while gathering resources such as Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals and Metals, plus rarer ingredients like Binding Catalyst, Biomaterials, Detonators and Control Units. Crafted items go to the Stash or straight into your loadout. Activision's reveal added the Bounty Board, a player-driven bounty system, and a progression track built around DMZ rank, Traits and upgrading the base.
Operators are persistent characters. Players start with two Operator slots and unlock a third through DMZ levels. Successful exfils level up Dog Tags, which earn Trait Points across the Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist trees. If an Operator goes missing in action, recovery costs rise with your Trait investment, and recovered Operators lose their gear. Loot, including Bank and Stash contents, is shared across all Active Duty Operators, which softens the loss of a single run.
Platforms, Game Pass and what you need to play
Gematsu lists PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2 and PC as the platforms, with PC on Steam, the Microsoft Store and Battle.net. Xbox Wire says the game is for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC and is not coming to Xbox One. It also states that Modern Warfare 4 is not on Xbox Game Pass this year, which is the question most of the Game Pass audience will ask. Our earlier piece on the game's pricing and PC specs is at /news/modern-warfare-4-game-pass-not-at-launch-price-pc-specs.
On Xbox, online multiplayer requires a Game Pass Essential subscription, sold separately. On PC, Xbox Wire says TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are required and other security measures may be enforced, a point that matters for anyone running an older or dual-boot machine. The Steam page lists the standard edition at $69.99. Xbox Wire does not say whether DMZ can be bought or unlocked separately, so the safe reading is that early access comes through owning the game.
Why this DMZ has more to prove than the first
The 2022 original arrived with Modern Warfare 2, drew a dedicated audience and, according to Gfinity Esports, fell short of Activision's popularity expectations. It received updates through 2023 before being retired. Gfinity's argument is that players found it easy to pick up but short on the progression and long-term depth of dedicated extraction games.
The competition has hardened since. Gfinity names Arc Raiders, Marathon and Escape from Tarkov as the games DMZ now has to beat, and points out that Arc Raiders was designed around extraction from the start. Call of Duty's advantage is its audience. The persistent Operators, the Trait trees and the crafting loop all read as a direct answer to the depth complaint, but only live play will show whether they hold up.
What we still do not know about DMZ
Several practical details are missing from the sources we opened. Xbox Wire does not say whether DMZ can be bought on its own, whether any free weekend is planned, or how large Hajin is. It names Free Roam without describing it, and it does not list the Story Missions or Dynamic Operation objectives. Any secondary claim about the map's size compared with earlier Call of Duty maps is not something we could confirm at the source, so we have left it out.
There is also a small inconsistency in the progression text: the post refers to a maximum of 18 Trait Points to earn and, separately, to over 60 Trait Points to choose from, and does not reconcile the two. That is the kind of detail that gets clarified once the mode is live, and it is worth checking before you plan an Operator build around it.
Our take: what to watch before you pre-purchase
The early-access window is the first real test. If you pre-purchase, DMZ opens on October 20, three days before everyone else, which means the first public impressions will come from a smaller, self-selected group. Treat those first-week reports with the usual caution until the full population arrives on October 23.
Open questions remain. DMZ's standalone cost and whether any free access is planned were not stated in the sources we opened, and a couple of Xbox Wire's progression numbers were not reconciled in the text. We will update this piece when Activision or Infinity Ward clarify, and when reviews of the mode begin to appear.
Frequently asked
When does Modern Warfare 4 DMZ come out?
Xbox Wire says players who digitally pre-order or pre-purchase Modern Warfare 4 get all of DMZ from Tuesday 20 October 2026, with Campaign early access starting Friday 16 October. The wider launch is October 23, the date Activision announced in June for PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2 and PC. Everyone else gets DMZ at launch, but sources did not describe a separate free trial.
Is Modern Warfare 4 DMZ free?
The sources we opened do not say DMZ is free. Xbox Wire ties early access to digitally pre-ordering or pre-purchasing Modern Warfare 4, and Steam lists the standard edition at $69.99. Neither source describes DMZ as a standalone free download, so assume you need the game. If Activision announces a free trial or standalone access later, we will update this answer.
Is Modern Warfare 4 on Game Pass?
No. Xbox Wire's DMZ feature states that Modern Warfare 4 is not on Xbox Game Pass this year. It also says online multiplayer on Xbox requires a Game Pass Essential subscription, which is sold separately. So Game Pass members who want DMZ will need to buy the game itself, and pre-purchasing is what unlocks the October 20 early-access date.
What platforms is Modern Warfare 4 DMZ on?
Gematsu lists PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2 and PC, with PC storefronts Steam, the Microsoft Store and Battle.net. Xbox Wire says the game is for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC, and is not available on Xbox One. PC players should note that Xbox Wire says TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are required, and other security measures may be enforced.
What are the DMZ game modes in Modern Warfare 4?
DMZ offers three ways to deploy. Story Missions are narrative-led, replayable deployments with gear and DMZ Cash rewards. Dynamic Operations let squads pursue multiple objectives for DMZ XP, Cash and a Supply Drop. Free Roam is the third option, which Xbox Wire names without detail. PvP and PvE share the same world on the new Hajin map, and everything ends with an extraction attempt.
How does progression and crafting work in DMZ?
The Forward Operating Base has a 3D Printer where you craft with gathered resources and rarer ingredients, and unlock recipes and upgrades as you progress. Operators start with two slots, a third unlocks through DMZ levels, and successful exfils level Dog Tags that earn Trait Points in the Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist trees. Missing Operators cost more to recover as you invest in Traits, and recovered ones lose their gear.
