Modern Warfare 4 Game Pass: the short answer

Modern Warfare 4 Game Pass access does not exist on launch day. Xbox's own store page for the game carries a flat line to that effect: 'Not on Xbox Game Pass this year.' The game goes on sale on 23 October 2026 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Battle.net and Steam, and anyone who wants to play it that day has to buy it.

That is a real change for subscribers. PCGamesN notes that the previous two Call of Duty releases, Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7, were included on Game Pass at launch. This time the library gets the game roughly a year later, and the company has said so in writing to its own members, which makes this settled news rather than a rumour.

What Xbox actually told Game Pass members

The clearest statement is the notification Xbox sent to subscribers. As reported by PCGamesN and Pure Xbox on 1 July 2026, it reads: 'Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 won't be available in Game Pass at launch. Game Pass availability starts Holiday 2027.' It then adds the line that matters most for your wallet: if you want to jump in on day one, you will need to purchase the game.

The policy behind it was set out earlier. In its 21 April 2026 Game Pass update, Xbox Wire said: 'Beginning this year, future Call of Duty titles won't join Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch. New Call of Duty games will be added to Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass during the following holiday season (about a year later).' Existing Call of Duty titles already in the library stay there, so nothing is being taken away from subscribers today.

“If you'd like to jump in on day one, you'll need to purchase the game.”

Xbox notification to Game Pass members, as reported by PCGamesN, 1 July 2026

Modern Warfare 4 price: $69.99, $99.99 and the $30 upgrade

On Xbox's store page the Standard Edition lists at $69.99 and the Vault Edition at $99.99, with a Vault upgrade at $30. Steam also lists the base game at $69.99. The Standard Edition includes the base game and Content Pack 1. The Vault Edition adds the Hostile Alliance and Special Forces Operator Packs, the Signature Weapon Collection, a DMZ Deployment Bonus and one season of BlackCell.

The game supports Xbox Play Anywhere on Xbox's store, so a purchase there should cover Xbox and Windows PC with one payment. The Xbox page lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Xbox Cloud Gaming as platforms. For anyone choosing between editions, the extra $30 buys cosmetics and a season of BlackCell, not a different campaign or a head start on the story.

Game Pass math after the April price cut

Here is the number that frames the decision. On 21 April 2026 Xbox cut Game Pass Ultimate from $29.99 to $22.99 a month and PC Game Pass from $16.49 to $13.99, with the note that prices may vary by region. At $22.99, three months of Ultimate comes to $68.97, so the $69.99 Standard Edition costs a little more than a quarter of a year of the top tier.

That puts the choice in plain terms. If you already pay for Game Pass for other reasons, the new Call of Duty is a separate $69.99 purchase on top. If you were thinking of subscribing mainly to play it, the subscription route now means waiting until Holiday 2027, so buying the game or skipping this year are the only options for October.

Modern Warfare 4 PC requirements, preload and early campaign access

The official Call of Duty PC post from 29 September 2026 lists the minimum spec as Windows 10 64-bit, a Ryzen 5 1400 or Core i5-6600, 8GB of RAM, a Radeon RX 470, GTX 970 or 1060, or Arc A580 with 3 GB of video memory, and 115 GB of SSD storage. The recommended spec, aimed at 90 FPS in multiplayer on High settings, asks for Windows 11, a Ryzen 5 3600 or Core i7-8700K, 16 GB of RAM, and a Radeon RX 6600 XT, RTX 3060 Ti or Arc B580 with 8 GB of video memory.

Dates matter here. PC preloading opens on 15 October at 9AM PT for digital pre-purchasers. From Friday 16 October, those same players get early access to the campaign, and the full game arrives on 23 October at midnight local time. The post also says the anti-cheat layer uses TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot integration, so older boards without those may have trouble. Steam's page shows 22 October for some regions, which looks like a time zone effect, so use the 23 October date Call of Duty and Xbox publish.

What is new on PC: upscaling, 90 FPS and Collateral

Beenox, working with Infinity Ward, lists AMD FSR Redstone, NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 and Intel XeSS 3 as upscaling options, with ray tracing supported in Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ. It also promises a built-in Benchmark Tool, 800-plus settings, and Advanced Shader Delivery, which precompiles shaders so the first launch is faster if you install the Xbox PC app first.

On the multiplayer side, the post introduces Collateral, a Search and Destroy style mode where teams alternate attacking and defending two bomb sites and earn cash to spend on upgrades between rounds. Respawns, killstreaks and automatic health regeneration are off. These are the developers' own claims, so treat the 90 FPS target as a promise to test, not a result.

Our take: buy now or wait

If Call of Duty is your main game and you play on launch weekend, buy it. The Game Pass route is closed until Holiday 2027, and the early campaign access from 16 October is a genuine perk for pre-purchasers. If you are a casual player who mostly dips into a Call of Duty a few months after release, waiting a year for it to land in a subscription you already pay for is now a legitimate, if slow, plan.

What is not defensible is paying for a Game Pass tier expecting this release to be included. Check your tier, your platform and the 23 October date before you spend anything, and run the official spec list against your PC before you preload.
