Pokémon Unite shutdown: the date and what was announced

The Pokémon Unite shutdown is set for Tuesday, March 23, 2027, at 00:00 UTC, which is 9:00 a.m. in Japan. The Pokémon Company and TiMi Studio Group announced on October 27, 2026 that the free-to-play MOBA will close on both Nintendo Switch and mobile. Gem sales stopped the same day, and unused paid Aeos gems will be refunded after service ends.

The announcement came through the game's official website and the Pokémon social accounts. Shacknews reproduced the notice, which thanks players "who have played since service started for the Nintendo Switch version on July 21, 2021" and promises a special event until the end. That puts the game's run at roughly five and a half years, counting from the Switch launch to the closing date.

The notice is brief on reasons. It does not say why the service is closing, and neither company has offered a public explanation at the time of writing. Everything below on why is context from earlier announcements, not a statement from the publisher.

What stops now, and what you can still spend

Monetisation ended first. According to Saiga NAK's translation of the schedule, Aeos gem sales, new Unite Club memberships and automatic renewals were all suspended on October 27, 2026 at 5:00 AM UTC. Inven Global reports the same cutoff as 2:00 p.m. Korean time.

Nothing you already own disappears early. PocketGamer.biz reports that gems you have already bought can be spent until service ends, and that current Unite Club members keep their perks until their membership period runs out. Saiga NAK's report says players can keep playing until the end-of-service date.

Players should treat the gems as a countdown rather than a balance to hoard. Anything spent before March buys cosmetics and items that will have no value after shutdown, while anything left unused is covered by the refund promise described below.

“We regret to inform you that service for Pokémon UNITE will end on Tuesday, March 23, 2027, at 00:00 UTC.”

The November 12 update and the Library feature

A single update on Thursday, November 12, 2026 brings the send-off. Per the schedule, it adds a special event where players can collect items from across the game's history, including Unite licenses and Holowear. PocketGamer.biz describes it as handing out licenses and cosmetics from the whole run, and Nintendo Everything adds that the event lets players earn special Unite Coins to swap for items and cosmetics.

The same update adds a Library feature. It lets players view battle records, acquired licenses, Holowear and other content after service ends, but only if they complete the required data download before shutdown. Inven Global notes that this data generally cannot be transferred when changing devices, so the download has to happen on the device you plan to keep.

Reports differ on what remains playable afterwards. Nintendo Everything says practice mode will still be usable, while GamingBolt says none of the game modes will stay playable, including single-player matches against bots. Since the publisher's own notice is the authority, treat the Library as a viewer for your records, not as a way to keep playing.

Aeos gem refunds: what to do before you uninstall

Saiga NAK's translation of the notice says refunds will be issued for unused paid Aeos gems after service ends. Detailed instructions for the refund process will be posted on the official Pokémon Unite website at that point, so the exact method, region rules and deadline are not yet known.

The one concrete instruction is to keep the software installed. Players holding unused paid gems are told not to delete the Nintendo Switch game or uninstall the mobile app until the refund process is complete. To check your balance, tap the plus icon in the upper-right corner of the home screen and read the figure on the Aeos gem purchase screen.

The notice refers to paid gems specifically. Free gems earned through play are not mentioned as refundable, and we have no source that says they are.

The Aeos Crown 2027 Tokyo finals will be Unite's last tournament

The competitive side will outlast almost everything else. Pokémon Unite Aeos Crown 2027 Tokyo goes ahead as previously announced, with regional qualifiers starting on Saturday, December 5, 2026. Inven Global lists the finals in Tokyo on March 20 and 21, 2027, which means the champion will be crowned two days before the servers close.

That tournament exists because of an earlier decision. In July 2026, Pokémon confirmed that Unite would be left out of the 2027 Championship Series and the World Championships, and the Tokyo event was spun off as a standalone competition. Pocket Gamer notes that August's Worlds in San Francisco was therefore Unite's last appearance there.

There is also a recent high point. Inven Global reports that Pokémon Unite was an official esports medal event at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in September 2026, where 58 players from 10 countries competed and South Korea took bronze. The closure announcement arrived roughly a month later.

Why is Pokémon Unite shutting down? The signs were there

Neither company has given a reason, but the trail is visible. Pocket Gamer points out that Aeos coins stopped being handed out last December, were swapped for License Journeys, and the coin exchange was wound down by May. Its writer concludes that the shutdown has been slowly arriving for about a year, which is that outlet's reading rather than an official statement.

The money side is modest by Pokémon standards, going by outside estimates. PocketGamer.biz reports that AppMagic estimates Unite earned around $107m on Google Play and the App Store across five years, and says the game never reached the cultural or revenue heights of Pokémon Go or Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket. As an estimate, that figure excludes Switch and should be read as a ballpark.

What it means for players, and what to do this week

The practical checklist is short. Check your paid gem balance, do not delete the app or game, use up or ignore free gems as you like, and plan to download the Library data after the November 12 update so your licenses and records survive as a viewable archive. The game's fan-content guidelines will also stop being maintained after shutdown, so creators who use Unite footage should expect support to end.

PocketGamer.biz places Unite in Pokémon's live-service mobile portfolio, below Pokémon Go and Trading Card Game Pocket on revenue. Pocket Gamer says it started strong in 2021 and ran out of steam. For players, the closure ends a five-year-old game whose last tournament will have a permanent champion, and the refund promise for unused paid gems is the part to act on.

Frequently asked

When is the Pokémon Unite shutdown?

Pokémon Unite shuts down on Tuesday, March 23, 2027, at 00:00 UTC, which is 9:00 a.m. in Japan, on both Nintendo Switch and mobile. The Pokémon Company and TiMi Studio Group announced it on October 27, 2026. Gem sales and new Unite Club memberships stopped that day, but the game stays playable, with a special event and Library feature arriving in an update on November 12, 2026.

Will I get a refund for Aeos gems in Pokémon Unite?

Yes for unused paid Aeos gems. Saiga NAK's translation of the official notice says refunds will be issued after service ends, and players should not delete the Switch game or uninstall the mobile app until the refund process is complete. Detailed instructions will be posted on the Pokémon Unite website after shutdown, so the method and deadline are not yet known. Free gems are not mentioned.

What is the Pokémon Unite Library feature?

The Library arrives in the November 12, 2026 update. It lets players view battle records, acquired licenses, Holowear and other content after service ends, but only if they complete the required data download before shutdown. Inven Global notes the data generally cannot be transferred between devices. Reports differ on whether any modes stay playable, so treat the Library as a viewer for your records.

Can I still play Pokémon Unite until March 2027?

Yes. The service runs until March 23, 2027. Gems you already bought can be spent until then, and current Unite Club members keep their perks until their membership period ends, according to PocketGamer.biz. What has stopped is new spending: Aeos gem sales, new Unite Club memberships and automatic renewals were suspended on October 27, 2026.

What happens to the Pokémon Unite Aeos Crown 2027 tournament?

It goes ahead as planned. Regional qualifiers start on December 5, 2026, and Inven Global lists the finals in Tokyo on March 20 and 21, 2027, two days before the servers close. The Tokyo event was created after Pokémon removed Unite from the 2027 Championship Series and World Championships in July 2026, so it will be the game's final tournament.

Why is Pokémon Unite shutting down?

No reason has been given in the official notice. Context from the press: Pocket Gamer notes Aeos coins were phased out over the past year, and PocketGamer.biz cites an AppMagic estimate of about $107m in mobile revenue over five years, well short of Pokémon Go or Trading Card Game Pocket. Those are outside readings, not statements from The Pokémon Company or TiMi.
