The Squadron 42 release date: Q2 2027, now on Steam

The Squadron 42 release date is a quarter, not a day. Steam now lists the single-player campaign from the Star Citizen universe as coming soon, with the release date field reading "Q2 2027". That is April to June 2027, and nothing narrower has been published. Simulation Daily reported on 10 October 2026 that Cloud Imperium Games opened the store page that day, describing the game as exclusive to PC.

That matters because it is the first time the game has had a storefront listing outside Cloud Imperium's own site. Players can wishlist it on Steam, and the page names Cloud Imperium Games as developer and Roberts Space Industries as publisher. What the page does not carry is a price. When we opened the listing on 11 October 2026 there was no price, no edition split and no pre-order button.

What the Steam page shows, and what it leaves out

Steam describes the game as a cinematic, single-player space adventure in which you enlist in the UEE Navy, pilot combat ships, fight on foot and explore capital ships, space stations and frontier outposts. It promises you will live and work alongside your crew in a galactic war. Simulation Daily adds that you play a rookie pilot as the Empire faces the Vanduul, and that the studio pitches the game as a mix of space combat, first-person shooter and what it calls a playable movie.

The language list is worth a note. English is marked as the only language with full audio support, with French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil) and Simplified Chinese among the other listed languages. The page is still a skeleton in the ways that drive purchase decisions: no price, no confirmed date, and no recommended hardware.

“At CitizenCon 2024 we announced we would ship in 2026. Our plan was to release in Q4 around IAE,”

Chris Roberts, Cloud Imperium chairman, Letter From The Chairman, as quoted by 80.lv

Squadron 42 system requirements on Steam

The Squadron 42 system requirements are the one hard number on the page. Steam lists a 64-bit Windows 11 system with a quad-core CPU (an Intel i7 from the Sandy Bridge generation or later, or an AMD Bulldozer chip or later), 16 GB of RAM, a DirectX 11.1 graphics card with 8 GB of VRAM, DirectX 12, a broadband connection and 150 GB of free storage.

Read those as a floor, not a target. The recommended section on the page contains only the line that a 64-bit processor and operating system are required, so Cloud Imperium has not said what hardware the game wants to run well. Minimum specs on an unreleased game can change before launch. The 150 GB install size is the part most players will feel first.

Why Squadron 42 left 2026: Chris Roberts, GTA 6 and a date that slipped before

The Q2 window is not new. Chris Roberts set it out in his 27 August 2026 Letter From The Chairman, which moved the game off its earlier Q4 2026 target. As 80.lv quoted him: "At CitizenCon 2024 we announced we would ship in 2026. Our plan was to release in Q4 around IAE," with IAE being the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo, Cloud Imperium's own expo.

His reason was timing against Rockstar. 80.lv quotes him saying there is "no way I want to launch my spiritual successor to Wing Commander" into that window, and Dexerto reports he called the period the "attention buzz saw of GTA6". Dexerto puts GTA 6 at 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC version announced. The two games would not share a platform, but Roberts was arguing about coverage and creator attention, not shelf space.

This is not the first time the schedule has moved. Dexerto notes that Cloud Imperium declared the game feature complete in 2023, then announced a 2026 window in 2024. TheFPSReview adds that the campaign has been in development since 2014, with Star Citizen itself first announced in 2012. A 2027 quarter is therefore the latest in a long run of targets, and the studio's own framing is that Q2 is simply a better slot than Q4.

That history is context, not a verdict. A store page with a quarter on it is a stronger commitment than a chairman's letter, because Steam wishlists are public and a missed quarter is visible. But a quarter is still a window the company controls, and nothing on the page binds it to a day.

The cast, the money and the Star Citizen link

Squadron 42 is a prequel set in the same universe as Star Citizen, which remains a crowdfunded multiplayer space sandbox in alpha. Simulation Daily lists a cast that includes Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Henry Cavill and Andy Serkis, and notes that veteran players hope it revives the spirit of the Wing Commander series.

The same report cites crowdfunding of $1,050,934,101 and 6,733,420 registered accounts for Star Citizen, while noting that not every account is a paying customer. We have not verified those totals against Cloud Imperium's own tracker, so treat them as the outlet's figures. The author also discloses that they have backed the campaign, which is worth knowing when reading enthusiasm into the coverage.

What we still do not know

Quite a lot. The sources we opened give no price, no edition list, no exact day and no recommended specs. Cloud Imperium also said a small number of original backers and long-time Star Citizen creators would get to play the game on 9 and 10 October, with a specific date to follow shortly afterwards. We found no coverage of what those sessions showed or whether a date was named, so we are not reporting one.

If a date does arrive, the thing to check is the primary source: the Steam page and a Roberts Space Industries post, not a clip from a creator session.

Our take: a quarter is a promise, not a date

The Steam page is real progress. It gives a store, a wishlist and a minimum spec, and it repeats the Q2 2027 window in a place the company cannot quietly edit. That is a better signal than a letter.

But the practical advice is unchanged. Do not plan around April, do not pay anyone for a pre-order that promises it, and wait for a price and a day from Cloud Imperium itself. Until then the Squadron 42 release date is Q2 2027, and that is all anyone can honestly say.

Frequently asked

What is the Squadron 42 release date?

Steam lists the Squadron 42 release date as Q2 2027, which means April to June 2027. Cloud Imperium has not announced an exact day. Chris Roberts moved the game from a Q4 2026 target in his 27 August 2026 letter, and said a specific date would follow backer sessions on 9 and 10 October. We found no report of a date being named.

Is Squadron 42 on Steam?

Yes. Cloud Imperium opened a Steam store page for Squadron 42 on 10 October 2026, according to Simulation Daily. It lists the game as coming soon for Q2 2027, names Cloud Imperium Games as developer and Roberts Space Industries as publisher, and lets players wishlist it. At the time we checked there was no price or pre-order button shown.

How much does Squadron 42 cost?

The price has not been announced. The Steam listing we opened on 11 October 2026 shows no price, and coverage of the delay said no edition or pricing had been revealed. Steam lists the game as not free, so a price is expected, but any figure you see before Cloud Imperium or Steam publishes one is a guess rather than a fact.

What are the Squadron 42 system requirements?

Steam lists minimum requirements only: a 64-bit Windows 11 system, a quad-core CPU (Intel i7 Sandy Bridge or later, or AMD Bulldozer or later), 16 GB of RAM, a DirectX 11.1 graphics card with 8 GB of VRAM, DirectX 12, broadband internet and 150 GB of free space. No recommended specification has been published yet.

Why was Squadron 42 delayed to 2027?

Chris Roberts wrote on 27 August 2026 that Q2 2027 is a better time to release than the original Q4 2026 plan around the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo. As 80.lv and Dexerto report, he did not want to launch into the attention around GTA 6, which Dexerto dates to 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Is Squadron 42 part of Star Citizen?

It is a single-player campaign set in the Star Citizen universe, and Simulation Daily describes it as a prequel. You play a rookie pilot in the UEE Navy facing the Vanduul. Star Citizen is the crowdfunded multiplayer space sandbox that has been in alpha for several years. Squadron 42 is listed on Steam as its own game.
