A reboot, not Fable 4
The important thing to understand about the new Fable is that it is not a continuation. Wikipedia describes it as a reboot that does not follow the original trilogy's timeline or characters, a fresh start set once more in the fictional kingdom of Albion. Playground Games, best known for Forza Horizon, is developing it with support from Eidos-Montreal and Third Kind Games, and Xbox Game Studios is publishing.
The official framing on Steam leans into player agency: becoming the Hero you choose to be in an open-world action RPG where choices shape the journey, reputation carries weight, and fairytale endings are not guaranteed. That is very much the Fable pitch, promising the series' familiar mix of consequence and mischief in a rebuilt world.
How it plays
This is a third-person, open-world action RPG. Wikipedia describes a style-weaving combat system that lets players move between melee weapons, ranged attacks and magic, and a reputation system in which how you behave changes how Albion's residents treat you. Steam's feature list adds romance and family-building, plus lifestyle roles such as landlord or blacksmith.
One of the more ambitious claims is the world's density. Wikipedia points to a Living Population of more than a thousand individually simulated NPCs with their own routines and relationships, voiced by roughly a hundred actors. Whether that simulation adds up to a world that feels reactive, rather than just busy, is one of the biggest open questions.
“A reboot buys freedom and risk in equal measure. Fable can be anything now, which is exactly why it has to prove it is still Fable.”
Release, platforms and the long road here
Fable is dated for 23 February 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and lands day one on Game Pass. Notably, this Xbox-published title is also confirmed for PS5, a sign of Microsoft's shifting multiplatform stance. It runs on ForzaTech, the engine Playground adapted from its Forza Horizon racing games for an action-adventure world.
The path to here has been long. Wikipedia dates the initial announcement to the July 2020 Xbox Games Showcase, with a first in-game trailer in June 2023 and a 2025 window announced in June 2024. It then slipped to 2026, and finally to February 2027, a move Wikipedia attributes to giving Fable its own moment separate from Grand Theft Auto VI.
What we are watching for
The central curiosity is the engine. ForzaTech has produced some of the best-looking open worlds in gaming, but a racing lineage is a long way from an RPG built on conversation, combat and consequence. How it handles crowds, interiors and reactive systems will tell us a lot.
The other watch item is tone. Fable's identity has always rested on British humour and moral choice as much as swordplay, and a reboot has to re-establish that voice from scratch rather than inherit it. There is also studio history at play: Playground built its name on racing games, so this is its first RPG and its clearest attempt to prove its range. It arrives into a busy stretch, weeks after Metro 2039 on 4 February, so it will need to make its case quickly. We have not played it, and these are expectations set by official material, not a verdict.
