The date, and the delays

After years of speculation, Rockstar has settled on 19 November 2026 for Grand Theft Auto VI, launching on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Wikipedia notes the game runs at 30 frames per second on both consoles at launch, and that no Windows version is currently planned, keeping this a console-first release for now.

Getting here took two public slips. The project first pointed at late 2025, then moved to 26 May 2026, and finally to 19 November 2026, with Rockstar's own newswire citing the extra time needed to finish the game to the standard players expect. It is worth stating plainly: this is the first numbered Grand Theft Auto since GTA V arrived in 2013, roughly 13 years of waiting.

Vice City, and a state called Leonida

GTA VI heads back to Vice City, Rockstar's Miami analogue, this time inside the wider fictional state of Leonida, which is based on Florida. Wikipedia's map rundown lists locations well beyond the city itself, including the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn and Mount Kalaga National Park, sketching a state that mixes neon coastline with swamp and small-town sprawl.

Scale has been a recurring talking point. Wikipedia notes the map is reportedly around three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's playable area. That figure is attributed reporting rather than an official spec, so we are treating it as a claim to verify rather than a confirmed number.

“Rockstar has moved this date twice already. Until a game is in players' hands, a preview is a map of promises, not a verdict.”

Jason and Lucia

For the first time in the mainline series, you play as two leads whose story is central rather than optional. Jason Duval is described as a former Army soldier who ended up working for drug runners in the Leonida Keys. Lucia Caminos is, per Wikipedia, the series' first non-optional female protagonist, introduced having served time at Leonida Penitentiary.

Rockstar's own framing on the official store pages leans on the pair being cornered by a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state, forced to depend on each other to survive. How the two-hander plays out mechanically, whether you swap freely or the story gates it, is the kind of detail a preview cannot settle until the game is out.

The reveals, and what is left to see

The public trail is short but loud. The first trailer premiered on 5 December 2023, a day after it leaked, revealing the title, the two leads and the setting. A second trailer followed on 6 May 2025. Most recently, an extended gameplay look premiered on 27 August 2026, which Rockstar used to show more of the world without touching the release date.

What remains genuinely unknown is everything that matters for a verdict: how the missions feel, how the systems layer, and whether the November window holds after two delays. We have not played it, and no amount of trailer footage substitutes for that. It is also the rare release big enough to bend the wider industry's schedule, with other studios openly wary of launching anywhere near it. For now, this is the most anticipated game of the year on paper, and the one most likely to reshape the autumn calendar around it.
