The best crypto games: a short list and the rule behind it

This is a guide to the best crypto games for players who want a good game first and a blockchain second. It is not financial advice, and we make no claim about any token's price. The short list we opened sources for this run: Gods Unchained, Pixels and Off the Grid. All three can be started without paying, and all three have a real game underneath, which is the rule that matters most.

Be warned about the limits of this list. Several of the facts below come from sources dated 2023 and 2024, because those were the primary pages and write-ups we could open this run, and the crypto games market moves fast. Treat each entry as a starting point, then check the game's own current page before you spend time, a wallet connection or money.

How we judge the best blockchain games

We use four tests. First, can you start for free? A game that demands a purchase before you can try it is asking for trust it has not earned. Second, is there a real game here, with rules and depth that stand without a token? Third, what do you actually own, and can you leave? Fourth, is the cost honest, meaning the game tells you where money goes in and where it can come out.

The reason for the fourth test is that earning claims are usually the weakest part. A token's value depends on other people continuing to buy it, so any promise of income is a promise about strangers' behaviour. We would rather you pick a game you enjoy and treat any earnings as a bonus than the other way round.

“The best crypto game is the one you would still play if the token vanished tomorrow.”

Gods Unchained: a card game you can start for free

Gods Unchained is a trading card game that, according to CoinMarketCap Academy, was built by the team behind Immutable and has been around since 2018. The same source says it is free to play, that players own their cards as NFTs, and that cards can be bought and sold on a marketplace. A GODS token is used for marketplace transactions, rewards and governance voting, per that explainer.

That ownership is the selling point, and it is also the risk. Cards you can sell can lose value, and the underlying chain can change, so check which network the game runs on today. The academy piece describes Immutable X as the chain, and we could not open the game's own site this run to confirm the current setup, so confirm it in the game before you connect anything.

Pixels: a free farming game with a token attached

Pixels is the cosiest entry. Decrypt describes it as a browser-based farming sim launched in 2021 on Polygon that moved to the Ronin network in late 2023, with inspiration drawn from Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing. Players grow crops, decorate land, talk to villagers and complete quests, and it is free to start. You can sign up with a Ronin wallet, MetaMask, email or phone number, which means a wallet is not strictly required to begin.

Ronin's own blog post from 31 October 2023 said more than 900,000 players had joined the game and framed its BERRY token as a way to keep play free, with the line: 'The more $BERRY you have, the more Pixels experiences you can discover.' Decrypt later reported that BERRY had been phased out in favour of PIXEL, which launched on Binance on 19 February 2024 with a 5 billion total supply and airdrops to about 28,000 wallets over two rounds. That history is a reminder that the token model of a crypto game can change under you.

Off the Grid: when the shooter comes first

Off the Grid is the most conventional game on this list. Its Steam page calls it a next-generation free-to-play battle royale from director Neill Blomkamp, developed and published by Gunzilla Games, and it launched on Steam on 17 July 2025. The page mentions an in-game marketplace where items you extract or earn can be traded, and it does not mention blockchain at all. That gap is worth noticing, because it shows the game is sold on gameplay first.

For the crypto side of Off the Grid, read our earlier coverage of its full release rather than inferring it from the store page. The useful lesson is general: a game can use blockchain features in the background while the store listing sells a shooter. That is the right order of priorities, and it is the opposite of the weaker projects that lead with the token.

Wallets, tokens and NFTs: what you actually own

Three terms do most of the work in these games. A wallet is the app that holds your keys, and it is how a game knows an item belongs to you. A token is a currency the game or its chain uses, such as GODS or PIXEL. An NFT is a unique item, like a card or a plot of land, recorded on a blockchain so that it can be traded outside the game's own shop.

Ownership is the real difference from a normal free game. In Gods Unchained, CoinMarketCap Academy says players own their cards as NFTs and can buy and sell them on a marketplace. In an ordinary card game the publisher can close the shop and your collection goes with it. Here the asset can outlive the game, but only if someone still wants to buy it, and that second condition is the one that bites when a game loses its audience.

What it costs you and what can go wrong

Free to start does not mean free forever. Pixels lists optional paid features, including NFT land plots and a VIP pass bought with RON, per Decrypt. Gods Unchained rewards spending on rarer cards in the way any collectible card game does. The cost may be small, but it is real, and spending is where most disappointment comes from.

There are also safety basics. Use a fresh wallet with a small balance for any game, never share a seed phrase, and treat unsolicited links from a Discord or X account as hostile. Do not buy a token because a game's community says it will rise; we publish no predictions and neither should anyone selling you a starter pack.

Which crypto game fits which player

If you like card strategy and do not mind a collector's mindset, start with Gods Unchained and play the free starter content before you touch the marketplace. If you want a relaxed, social game and are curious about wallets, Pixels is the gentlest introduction, particularly since you can sign up with an email. If you want a fast shooter first, Off the Grid is the one to try, because the free download is the commitment.

Whichever you pick, set a rule before you start: a budget you can lose, a time limit and a clear reason you are playing. Players who do that tend to enjoy these games for what they are, and the ones who join chasing income are the ones who write the angry threads later.

Our take

The best crypto games in 2026 are the ones that would survive without the token. Gods Unchained, Pixels and Off the Grid each have a free way in and a real game on the other side. None of that makes them safe investments, and we are not saying they are.

Play the free version first, keep your spending small, and verify the current details on each game's official page. If a project cannot explain in one paragraph what you own and what it costs, skip it.

Frequently asked

What are the best crypto games to play in 2026?

Based on the sources we opened, Gods Unchained, Pixels and Off the Grid are good starting points because all three are free to begin and have real gameplay beneath the blockchain features. Gods Unchained is a card game with NFT cards, Pixels is a farming game that lets you sign up with an email, and Off the Grid is a free-to-play battle royale on Steam. Verify current details on each official page, since several of our figures date from 2023 and 2024.

Are there free crypto games?

Yes. Gods Unchained is described as free to play, with players owning their cards as NFTs. Pixels is free to start and lets you sign up with a Ronin wallet, MetaMask, email or phone number. Off the Grid is a free-to-play download on Steam. Free to start does not mean free to progress, because optional purchases such as land plots, a VIP pass or rarer cards can add cost, so set a budget first.

Do you need a crypto wallet to play crypto games?

Not always. Decrypt reports that Pixels lets players sign up with a Ronin wallet, MetaMask, email or phone number, so a wallet is not strictly required to begin. Ronin's 2023 post said players could log in with a Ronin wallet. Off the Grid's Steam page makes no mention of blockchain. Requirements differ by game and change over time, so check the current sign-up screen before you connect any wallet.

Can you make money playing crypto games?

Some games pay in tokens or let you sell NFTs, but income is never guaranteed. A token's value depends on other buyers, and Pixels' own token model changed from BERRY to PIXEL between 2023 and 2024. Treat any earnings as a possible bonus, not a plan, and never spend money you cannot afford to lose. We do not forecast token prices and nothing here is financial advice.

How do I stay safe playing crypto games?

Use a separate wallet holding only a small amount, never share your seed phrase, and ignore unsolicited links from Discord or social media accounts. Download games only from official pages such as Steam or the developer's own site. Pixels lets players sign up with an email, which keeps your main wallet out of it. Start with the free version and decide on any spending after you know you enjoy the game.

Is Off the Grid a crypto game?

Its Steam page sells it as a free-to-play battle royale from director Neill Blomkamp, developed and published by Gunzilla Games and launched on 17 July 2025. The page mentions an in-game marketplace for tradable items but does not mention blockchain. For the crypto side, check our earlier coverage of its full release and Gunzilla's own channels, because a store page alone does not tell you how the economy works.
