The best play-to-earn games in Indonesia in 2026: the short answer
Disclosure: this is journalism, not financial advice, and nothing here speculates on any token's price. GTW holds no position in any game or token mentioned and has no client relationship with any of them.
The best play to earn games in Indonesia in 2026 are the ones you would still play if the token paid nothing. Pixels, Axie Infinity and Alien Worlds are all live as of October 2026, but none of them is a dependable income, and Indonesian rules around crypto, tax and gambling are stricter than most guides admit.
Almost every list for this search repeats 2021 and 2022 material about guilds and scholars. We wrote this one from the other end: what Indonesian regulators have actually done, what the adoption data does and does not show, and what a payout looks like after the hype. The games come after the rules, because the rules decide what a sensible player can do.
Why Indonesia keeps showing up in play-to-earn searches
The appetite is real. Chainalysis ranked Indonesia seventh in its 2025 Global Crypto Adoption Index, published on 2 September 2025, and said Asia-Pacific was the fastest-growing region for on-chain activity, with value received up 69% year on year in the 12 months to June 2025. Indonesia's financial regulator, OJK, reported 22.69 million crypto investors in June 2026 and Rp28.58 trillion of crypto transactions that month, according to Warta Ekonomi's report of 3 August 2026.
Read those numbers as estimates and as exchange activity, not as game activity. They count people who hold or trade crypto, and many of them never touch a blockchain game. There is no named estimator we could find that publishes a clean count of Indonesian play-to-earn players today, so any article quoting one is guessing. The older Southeast Asian push came from guilds: Yield Guild Games Southeast Asia said in December 2021 that it had raised $15 million, with Indonesia among its first focus markets, per Bitpinas. That was the peak of the model, not the present.
“If a game asks you to deposit money for a guaranteed daily return, it is not a game. It is the same pitch OJK keeps shutting down.”
Is play to earn legal in Indonesia?
Playing a free-to-play blockchain game is not a crime in itself, and we found no Indonesian ruling that bans play-to-earn as a category. What changed is who supervises the money around it. Under Law 4 of 2023 and OJK Regulation 27 of 2024, oversight of crypto assets moved from Bappebti, the commodity futures regulator, to OJK in January 2025, according to Rajah Tann Asia. Firms that Bappebti had licensed were recognised automatically as digital financial asset trading providers, with a grace period to July 2025.
Two caveats matter for players. First, that law firm's summary does not say how tokens earned inside games, or NFTs, are classified, and we could not find an OJK statement that settles it. Second, OJK's own warning is blunt: trade only through licensed providers, check that the asset is on the official crypto asset list, and call 157 to verify. If your game token is not tradable on a licensed Indonesian exchange, cashing out means using a foreign platform, which is where the risk and the tax difference sit.
Crypto tax in Indonesia: what the 2025 rule says and does not say
Indonesia's Ministry of Finance rule PMK 50/2025 took effect on 1 August 2025. KPMG's tax note of 13 November 2025 says final income tax on crypto transactions is 0.21% through domestic electronic system providers and 1% through foreign ones, and that transfers of crypto assets are exempt from VAT. In plain terms, selling through a foreign platform is taxed at roughly five times the domestic rate.
What we could not verify is how in-game rewards are treated. The rule is written around trading on electronic systems, and we found no official guidance on a token you earn by playing and never sell. Do not assume it is untaxed. If you earn anything meaningful, ask a licensed Indonesian tax adviser, and keep dated records of what you received and what you sold.
Which play-to-earn games are still live in Indonesia: Pixels, Axie and Alien Worlds
Pixels is the clearest live example. Its official site describes a farming and world-building game you can play free, with land and assets on the Ronin chain and a $PIXEL token you can stake. It claims over 10 million players, which is the game's own number and not an audited one. Ronin's 2025 review lists Pixels as winning Browser Game of the Year and recording 4 million RON in trading volume. Pixels fits the 2026 shift: the game comes first and the token is optional.
Axie Infinity is still running, but the earning side has been cut back. Sky Mavis stopped SLP rewards in Axie Origins ranked mode on 7 January 2026, saying extraction at that scale was harmful to the long-term health of the ecosystem, per Bitpinas. Players can still spend SLP on crafting and morphing, but they can no longer earn it that way. The same review of Ronin lists Ragnarok Landverse at 120,000 monthly active players, 70% of them traditional gamers, per Ronin.
Alien Worlds sits at the weak end of the shortlist. An Alien Worlds-branded iOS app, Milky Way Miner, was last updated on 7 October 2025 and describes an idle clicker with a tournament mode where the top 50% of players win TLM. It also sells gold for $1.99 to $99.99. That is a game that earns money from you first. We did not find a named estimate of how many people play it in Indonesia, so we cannot call it popular here.
What payouts looked like after the boom
The Axie story is the best evidence available for what a reward token does to a mass market. Reason reported in February 2022 that SLP fell from above $0.40 in summer 2021 to about $0.01 by January 2022, and that when SLP was worth $0.35 a casual player's 220 daily SLP was worth about $75. That is why the model spread so fast in lower-income countries, and why it collapsed so hard. The same piece noted that about 250 million SLP were produced a day while only 50 million were used for breeding.
The sector has not recovered. DappRadar data reported by CoinDesk on 11 July 2025 put blockchain gaming funding at $73 million in Q2 2025, down 93% year on year and the lowest in two years, with more than 300 web3 games closed and daily unique active wallets down 17% on the quarter. DappRadar blamed unsustainable tokenomics and low retention. A game that has outlived that period is worth noting, but survival is not a payout guarantee.
The gambling line: when a game token starts to look like a bet
Indonesia treats gambling as a serious crime, and the state is enforcing it. Komdigi, the communications ministry, blocked 2.09 million gambling-related items in 2025, according to a Katadata report of 13 July 2026, including 43,475 on Google and YouTube and 92,322 on Meta. Article 27(2) of the 2024 ITE Law bans distributing or making accessible electronic information containing gambling, and Articles 426 and 427 of the 2023 Criminal Code cover gambling offences, per Literasi Hukum on 20 May 2026. That source says the law reaches parties beyond operators, but does not give penalties, so we do not quote any.
Why this matters for a game player: some blockchain titles sit close to wagering. Ronin's 2025 review reports that players on Cambria wagered more than $30 million in its Duel Arena, and it lists Fortune Spin with over 200,000 spins. We found no Indonesian ruling on whether any specific game is gambling, so the safe reading is practical. If you stake money on a random or player-versus-player outcome, you are closer to the line than if you farm crops for free. Stay out of it.
Scams and security: the risks that cost players money
Fake platforms are the immediate danger. OJK's Satgas PASTI said on 22 June 2026 that it had stopped 228 illegal digital financial asset traders between January and May 2026, and told the public to avoid guaranteed returns and passive income without risk. A game promising daily rupiah for a deposit fits that pattern exactly.
The chain itself has been a target. In March 2022, an attacker used hacked private keys to forge withdrawals from the Ronin bridge and took about $625 million in ether and USDC, a theft discovered on 29 March, six days after it happened, per TechCrunch. Ronin is better known for games than for security, and that history is a fair reason to keep only small balances in any game wallet.
Our take: who should play, and who should not
If you want a game, Pixels is the reasonable starting point because you can play it free and treat the token as a side feature. If you want a job, none of these is one. The data we could verify shows reward tokens falling, funding falling and the biggest title cutting its own payouts.
Our rule for an Indonesian player is short. Play only what is fun without a payout, spend only what you would lose, use OJK-licensed providers for any conversion to rupiah, assume a tax bill exists until an adviser says otherwise, and walk away from anything that asks you to deposit for a guaranteed return.
Frequently asked
What are the best play-to-earn games in Indonesia?
As of October 2026, the live options we could verify are Pixels, Axie Infinity and Alien Worlds. Pixels is free to play on the Ronin chain and its token is optional. Axie stopped SLP rewards in Origins ranked mode on 7 January 2026. Alien Worlds' iOS app sells gold and offers token prizes to the top half of tournament players. None is a dependable income, and we found no named estimate of Indonesian player numbers for any of them.
Is play to earn legal in Indonesia?
We found no Indonesian ruling that bans play to earn as a category, and free-to-play blockchain games are not a crime in themselves. Crypto oversight moved from Bappebti to OJK in January 2025, and OJK tells people to use only licensed providers and listed assets. Gambling is a serious offence under the 2024 ITE Law and the 2023 Criminal Code, so avoid any game where you stake money on a random or player-versus-player outcome.
Do you pay tax on play-to-earn crypto in Indonesia?
PMK 50/2025, effective 1 August 2025, sets final income tax at 0.21% on crypto transactions through domestic providers and 1% through foreign ones, per KPMG, and exempts transfers from VAT. We found no official guidance on tokens earned inside a game and never sold, so do not assume they are untaxed. Keep dated records and ask a licensed Indonesian tax adviser if you earn anything meaningful.
Is Axie Infinity still worth playing in Indonesia in 2026?
Axie is still running, but the earning side has shrunk. Sky Mavis halted SLP rewards in Axie Origins ranked mode on 7 January 2026, citing bots and shrinking player liquidity, and players can no longer earn SLP there. SLP can still be used for crafting and morphing. If you enjoy the card battles, it can be worth playing for fun. As an income source it is not, and history shows SLP fell from above $0.40 to about $0.01 in 2021 and 2022.
How do I spot a play-to-earn scam in Indonesia?
Be wary of guaranteed returns, passive income without risk, pressure to recruit others, and platforms that are not on OJK's list of licensed providers. OJK's Satgas PASTI stopped 228 illegal digital financial asset traders between January and May 2026. Check a provider's licence through OJK, call 157, and report suspected scams at sipasti.ojk.go.id. Never share your wallet seed phrase or private keys, which is how the 2022 Ronin bridge theft of about $625 million happened.
How many people in Indonesia use crypto?
OJK reported 22.69 million crypto investors in Indonesia in June 2026 and Rp28.58 trillion of crypto transactions that month. Chainalysis ranked Indonesia seventh in its 2025 Global Crypto Adoption Index. These figures count people who hold or trade crypto, not people who play blockchain games. We found no named estimate of how many Indonesians play play-to-earn titles, so treat any claimed player count for the country, from a game or a guide, as unverified.
