Play to earn games Vietnam players ask about: the short answer

Disclosure: this is journalism, not financial advice, and nothing here speculates on any token's price. GTW holds no position in any game or token mentioned and has no client relationship with any of them.

The honest answer on play to earn games Vietnam players ask about in 2026 is that the games still exist, the law around them has changed a lot, and the money has shrunk. Free-to-play titles such as Pixels are live and Axie Infinity is still running, but Axie's own developer, Sky Mavis, a Vietnamese startup, shut off the main reward faucet in ranked play on 7 January 2026. Meanwhile Vietnam now recognises crypto as property, taxes each transfer, and treats gambling as a crime.

Most guides for this search repeat 2021 and 2022 stories about scholars and guilds. This one starts from the rules and the verified numbers. Why Vietnam keeps showing up in play-to-earn searches

The appetite is real and well documented, with one caveat on age. Chainalysis ranked Vietnam fourth in its 2025 Global Crypto Adoption Index, published on 2 September 2025, and said Asia-Pacific was the fastest-growing region for on-chain activity, with value received up 69% year on year and total transaction volume rising from $1.4 trillion to $2.36 trillion between June 2024 and June 2025. Chainalysis described Vietnam as one of the countries whose populations drove widespread adoption across both centralized and decentralized services.

For games specifically, the best number we could open is old. Finder surveyed 43,312 people across 26 countries in March 2022, including 2,003 in Vietnam, and found 23% of Vietnamese adults had played play-to-earn games, with a further 10% planning to. That put Vietnam fifth of 26 and well above the 14% global average. Men reported playing at 27% and women at 20%. We found no named estimator with a current count of Vietnamese players, so read that survey as a snapshot of the boom, not of today.

“I get $600 to $1300 in two weeks, and I earn only half of that from my full-time job.”

Which play to earn games Vietnam players can still use: Axie and Pixels

Axie Infinity is the Vietnamese story. The Investor reported in June 2022 that Axie was developed by Sky Mavis, a Vietnamese startup, and the game is still running in 2026. What changed is the earning side. On 7 January 2026 Sky Mavis stopped issuing SLP rewards in Axie Origins ranked mode. In its community letter, as quoted by Bitpinas, the studio said: "SLP extraction at this scale is harmful to the long-term health of the Axie ecosystem." It cited falling player liquidity against unchanged rewards, which let bots farm higher ranks. SLP can still be used for crafting and morphing Axies.

Pixels is the clearest free example today. Its official site describes a farming and world-building game you can play for free, with land and assets on the Ronin chain and a $PIXEL token you can stake. It claims over 10 million players, which is the game's own number and not an audited one. The 2026 pattern is that the game comes first and the token is optional, and that is the only way we would suggest anyone approach it.

We deliberately list only what we could verify this month. Plenty of other titles claim Vietnamese communities, but we could not open an independent source for their player numbers or payouts, so we are not recommending them.

What play-to-earn payouts looked like, then and now

The quote everyone remembers is from the boom. A player Vietcetera calls Max said in 2022: "I get $600 to $1300 in two weeks, and I earn only half of that from my full-time job." That was a real income for a short window, in a market where guilds lent NFTs to scholars who split earnings with the owner. It was also tied to a reward token that was then falling hard.

The 2026 evidence points the other way. Sky Mavis ended SLP rewards in Axie Origins ranked mode, and the stated reason was that the system was being drained by bots while real players shrank. Read together, the two facts say the same thing: a reward token only pays while new money keeps arriving. As of October 2026, we would not treat any Vietnamese or international play-to-earn game as a dependable income, and we found no independent source claiming otherwise.

Is play to earn legal in Vietnam? The crypto law in 2026

Vietnam's National Assembly passed the Law on Digital Technology Industry on 14 June 2025, and it took effect on 1 January 2026, according to Wong & Partners' summary. The law defines a digital asset as an asset under the Civil Code represented as digital data, and a crypto asset as one that uses cryptography for authentication. The same summary says crypto is not legal tender and may not be used as a lawful means of payment for goods and services. Only the Vietnamese dong is legal tender.

That summary does not address in-game items or tokens earned inside games, and we found no Vietnamese ruling that bans play to earn as a category. So the careful reading is this: playing a free blockchain game is not what the law targets, but how you convert or sell tokens is regulated. Under Resolution 05/2025/NQ-CP of 9 September 2025, crypto trading is meant to run through licensed service providers. The Block reported that applications for the first exchange licences opened on 21 January 2026, with a minimum contributed capital of 10 trillion dong (about $400 million), Vietnamese enterprises only and foreign ownership capped at 49%.

In practice that means a Vietnamese player's legal route to cash out is a licensed domestic platform that settles in dong. We could not verify which platforms are fully licensed today, so check the regulator's current list before you use any service.

Crypto tax in Vietnam: the 0.1% rule and what it leaves out

Vietnam's Ministry of Finance issued Circular 32/2026/TT-BTC on 27 March 2026, and Circular 41/2026/TT-BTC on tax administration on 6 April 2026, according to Baker McKenzie's note of 11 May 2026. Individual sellers pay 0.1% personal income tax on the gross transfer price of each transaction, and crypto asset service providers must withhold and remit it. The tax is on the full value of each transfer, not on profit, and transfers are exempt from VAT.

What the note does not say is how tokens earned inside a game and never sold are treated. The circulars are written around transfers through service providers, so we cannot tell you that game rewards are untaxed. Do not assume it. Keep dated records of what you earn and sell, and ask a licensed Vietnamese tax adviser if the amounts are meaningful.

Gambling, scams and security: where play to earn turns risky

Vietnam treats gambling seriously. Gambling News reported on 26 September 2025 that a Vietnamese court sentenced 43 people over an online gambling operation that processed about $3.8 billion between early 2020 and late 2021, with four siblings receiving 8 to 13 years in prison. The scheme had around 20,000 customers at its peak and used social media such as Telegram to push users to recruit others, and it involved cryptocurrency despite crypto's restricted status at the time.

Why that matters for a player: some blockchain games sit close to wagering, and recruitment-driven schemes look a lot like the pyramid-style promotions that regulators prosecute. A game that asks for a deposit in return for a guaranteed daily payout is not a game. Another rule applies to every wallet: never share a seed phrase or private key, and keep only small balances in any game wallet. We opened no source that lists a Vietnam-specific scam hotline, so we are not naming one.

Our take: who should play, and who should not

If you want a game, start with Pixels and treat the token as a side feature. If you want a job, none of the games we could verify offers one, and the one Vietnamese-built title everyone knows has cut its own payouts. Play only what is fun without a payout, spend only what you can lose, convert through licensed Vietnamese providers, assume the 0.1% transfer tax applies when you sell, and walk away from anything that promises guaranteed returns or asks you to recruit.

The legal position is the part most likely to change. Vietnam's pilot crypto market runs for five years from September 2025, and the law around game tokens is not yet written down. We will update this guide when that changes.

Frequently asked

Which play to earn games Vietnam players can use in 2026?

As of October 2026, the live options we could verify are Pixels and Axie Infinity. Pixels is free to play on the Ronin chain, with an optional $PIXEL token, and claims over 10 million players on its own site. Axie was built by Vietnamese startup Sky Mavis, but it stopped SLP rewards in Origins ranked mode on 7 January 2026. Neither is a dependable income, and we found no named estimate of Vietnamese player numbers.

Is play to earn legal in Vietnam?

We found no Vietnamese ruling that bans play to earn as a category. The Law on Digital Technology Industry, effective 1 January 2026, recognises crypto as an asset but not as legal tender or a lawful means of payment, and it does not address in-game items in the summary we read. Crypto trading is meant to go through licensed providers under Resolution 05/2025/NQ-CP. Gambling is a different matter and is prosecuted, so avoid games that wager money.

Do you pay tax on play-to-earn crypto in Vietnam?

Circular 32/2026/TT-BTC, issued on 27 March 2026, sets a 0.1% personal income tax on the gross price of each crypto transfer made through service providers, which must withhold and remit it. Transfers are exempt from VAT, per Baker McKenzie. We found no official guidance on tokens earned in a game and never sold, so do not assume they are untaxed. Keep dated records and ask a licensed Vietnamese adviser.

Is Axie Infinity still worth playing in Vietnam in 2026?

Axie is still running, but the earning side has shrunk. Sky Mavis stopped SLP rewards in Axie Origins ranked mode on 7 January 2026, citing bots and falling player liquidity, and SLP can still be used for crafting and morphing. If you enjoy the card battles it can be worth playing for fun. As an income source we would not treat it as one, given the studio's own statement about extraction harming the ecosystem.

How many people in Vietnam play play-to-earn games?

The best figure we could open is old. Finder's March 2022 survey of 2,003 Vietnamese respondents found 23% of adults had played play-to-earn games, 5th of 26 countries and above the 14% global average. We found no named estimator with a current count of Vietnamese players, so treat any recent player number for Vietnam, from a game or a guide, as unverified.

How do I avoid a play-to-earn scam in Vietnam?

Be wary of guaranteed returns, pressure to recruit others and any platform that is not a licensed service provider. A Vietnamese court sentenced 43 people in September 2025 over an online gambling operation with about 20,000 customers that recruited through social media, per Gambling News. Never share your seed phrase or private key, and keep only small balances in any game wallet.
