Web3 gaming has shrunk a lot since 2021, and many hyped projects have quietly shut down. So this is not a list of everything with a token. It is a shortlist of games that were genuinely live and playable as of September 2026, chosen for how they play rather than for any earning angle. Where a game is under financial strain, we say so.

A note on wallets. Most of these titles are free to start, and several now hide the blockchain behind an ordinary email sign-up. You can try them without spending anything, which is exactly how we would suggest approaching them.

One more thing worth saying up front. The web3 games that have lasted tend to be built by well-funded studios and platforms rather than by anonymous teams promising quick riches. That is not a coincidence. Making a game good enough to hold players is expensive and slow, and the projects that skipped that step are mostly the ones that have already closed.

Off the Grid

Off the Grid is the highest-profile game on this list. Built by Gunzilla Games with narrative direction from film-maker Neill Blomkamp, it is a cyberpunk third-person battle royale for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. It entered early access on 8 October 2024 and reached Steam in July 2025, with a 1.0 full release scheduled for October 2026, according to Wikipedia and Dot Esports.

It plays as a story-driven battle royale first. Blockchain features run on GUNZ, Gunzilla's own gaming network, and the studio says NFT elements are optional, per Wikipedia. In other words you can drop in and play it like any other free battle royale and largely ignore the on-chain layer, which is a large part of why it has drawn a mainstream audience the sector rarely reaches.

Pixels and Gods Unchained

Pixels is a browser-based social farming MMO with a friendly pixel-art look, closer in spirit to Stardew Valley than to a crypto exchange. It moved from Polygon to Sky Mavis's Ronin network in February 2024, a switch that drove a large jump in activity, and it later reported passing 1.1 million players on Ronin, according to VentureBeat and GAMES.GG. You farm, gather resources, level up skills and complete quests, and the token layer sits behind land and items.

Gods Unchained is a free-to-play tactical trading card game on Immutable, often compared to Hearthstone, with the twist that your cards are NFTs you actually own and can trade. It is one of the longest-running web3 games and continued shipping content into 2026, including its Waking Plague expansion, per Immutable's own listing. Its GODS token has fallen heavily from its all-time high, which is a reminder that a solid game and a healthy token economy are two different things.

Both are also good examples of how the blockchain has faded into the background. You can play Pixels in a browser and Gods Unchained like an ordinary card game, and in each case the ownership layer is there if you want it and easy to ignore if you do not. That is the direction the better web3 games have moved in during 2026.

Illuvium, The Sandbox and the honest caveats

Illuvium is an ambitious set of connected games on Immutable, spanning an open-world creature-collecting RPG and an auto-battler arena. It is genuinely playable and visually polished. It is also under real financial pressure. Its ILV token hit an all-time low in late July 2026, roughly 99 percent below its earlier high, and the studio has spoken about tightening its budget, according to CryptoTicker. Enjoy it as a game, but go in aware of the economics.

The Sandbox is the survivor of the metaverse era, a voxel world where users build experiences on LAND parcels held as NFTs, backed by a long list of brand and celebrity collaborations. It is still live, but daily activity is a fraction of its 2021 to 2022 peak, so expect a quieter world than the marketing suggests. Axie Infinity, the game that defined play-to-earn, is also still running on Ronin, though its active player base is far below the roughly 2.7 million daily users it saw at its 2021 peak.

That gap between past and present activity is the honest backdrop to any best-of list in this space. The games here are the survivors, and even the survivors are quieter than their headline numbers from a few years ago. We would rather tell you that plainly than pretend the sector is booming.

The pattern across the list is consistent. The games worth trying are the ones that hold up as games. Every one of them has a token that has been volatile, which is precisely why we judge them on play and leave prices out of it.

Our take

If you want one place to start, Off the Grid is the easiest entry point because it plays like a normal battle royale and you can skip the crypto entirely. Pixels is the gentlest, and Gods Unchained is the pick for card-game fans. Illuvium and The Sandbox are worth a look for their ambition, with eyes open about their economies.
